Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif reunite for this film, after their successful pairing in the blockbuster 3 Idiots. The drama/thriller is based on a novel by Khalid Hossieni. Due to Muslim protests, the movie was released in Pakistan on 27 December 2012 with some essential parts of the story omitted from cinemas there. The film had a thunderous success at Indian box office by placing third among highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time and received universal acclaim from critics for its sheer quality. The Wall Street Journal declares it "the most beautiful Hindi-language movie ever". The film received multiple awards at the numerous ceremonies. Anjali is an intelligent and headstrong young woman in Islamabad, who lives with her uncle, a former government officer who has not been able to obtain a job after the end of his tenure. Anjali is a scholarship student in Harvard Medical School, where she has been advised not to take pre-med courses because she would be unlikely to fit into any of the available specialties. In order to get her degree without taking pre-med courses, Anjali wants to be a doctor and has been secretly experimenting with organic chemistry. Her uncle needs money to get married, so Anjali decides to take a job as a trainee doctor at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where her brother is also training. Dr. Khurram Shehzad and his friend and colleague Dr. Adarsh Kumar, after visiting their friend and colleague, neurosurgeon Dr. Javed Ansari in jail, drive back home to their apartment block "Tirupati". On the way they encounter an accident and rescue Muhammad Danish Khan from his crashed car. Dr. Shehzad drives Danish to his hotel as he is dazed and injured by the accident, while Dr. Adarsh goes home to take a shower. Danish tells them a young boy was injured after being hit by a car, and complains about the driver of the car who wouldn't help him. The next day Danish is admitted to PIMS for treatment after he has been knocked unconscious by an epileptic seizure, and is placed in Anjali's ward. Anjali meets Danish and they quickly get along from the start. She notices that he pinches her wrist when she goes to take his blood pressure, but doesn't think anything of it until she sees him doing this with other patients in the hospital; she concludes that he must be moving angry at something in order to shake off pain. Danish's father, a former army officer who is suffering from a terminal liver cancer, is being treated at PIMS because the family cannot afford treatment in the US. Danish tells Anjali that he has a secret back home and that he'll tell her if she sees him just one more time. He then asks her to promise that they will meet again after six months. Anjali visits her brother at his school and finds out from him that Danish watches them from his hospital room using binoculars. She believes he must be suffering from some psychological disorder and hopes to help him through therapy.
